Developer Diary #10

27/04/26
A masonic lodge ballot box

It's been another busy stretch behind the scenes, and this release is a bit of a mixed bag — some highly-requested new features, a good number of fixes, and a fairly significant change to how we handle support going forward.

As always, please do log in and have a play around. There's quite a bit to explore this time.

What's new in this release?

Granular Permissions for Delegates

This one has been at the top of the request list for a long time, and I'm really pleased to see it finally land.

Secretaries can now create custom roles for Delegate Users, with each role granting access to specific features and areas of the system. Rather than every Delegate having broad access, you can now tailor exactly what each individual can see and do.

This is particularly useful for Lodges where different Brethren help with different aspects of admin — your Almoner doesn't necessarily need access to the Treasurer's section, and your Assistant Secretary may only need a defined slice of the system. You're now in full control of that.

Signature Blocks on the Event Planner

You can now add a signature block onto Event Planner documents, making it much simpler to get plans formally signed off. A small addition, but one that should remove a few extra steps for those running tighter approval processes.

Names on the Floor Plan – More Options

Following on from last release's Table Plan improvements, we've added a variety of new options for adding names directly onto the floor plan. This gives you more flexibility in how plans are presented and printed — particularly useful for larger Festive Boards and Installation meetings.

Published PDFs – Cleaner Output

Margins have been tightened up and a number of overlap and display issues on published PDFs have been resolved. If you've previously had documents that didn't quite sit right on the page, they should now be looking far more polished.

A New Way of Handling Support

This is the big structural change in this release, and it deserves its own section.

As The Working Tools has grown, support volumes have grown with it. We're a small team, and to make sure nothing falls through the cracks — and that we're spending our time building the things users actually want — we've introduced two new tools:

Bug Reports
A dedicated form for reporting bugs, which prompts you for the details we need to actually investigate properly. No more back-and-forth chasing for screenshots or steps to reproduce.

Feature Requests
A public board where users can suggest enhancements and vote on each other's ideas. The most popular requests will float to the top, and we'll use that to help shape what we build next.

Feature Requests also include a tags system, so we can mark suggestions with rough time horizons. Anyone who upvotes a request will be automatically notified when there's an update on its progress — so you'll never have to wonder whether something is being looked at.

Both are accessible from the Help menu, or directly here:

To be clear — this isn't about being less responsive. It's about being more responsive in a way that scales. WhatsApp has served us well, but it's not the right tool for tracking issues across a growing user base. The aim is to reduce reliance on WhatsApp support so we can spend more time building what you've asked for.

I'd genuinely encourage you to give the Feature Board a look. Even if you don't have a request of your own, your votes help us prioritise.

Bug fixes & ongoing work

  • The display order of events has been corrected in a few areas where it wasn't behaving as expected
  • Date-based searches have been fixed where edge cases were causing incorrect results
  • A handful of smaller fixes off the back of recent feedback

Documentation

We're still actively expanding the documentation, and this is now being updated every time a feature lands — not weeks later. If you're trying to work out how to do something, the documentation should be your first port of call.

What's coming next?

With the new Bug Reports and Feature Board now live, the next release will be heavily shaped by what comes through them. I'd expect it to be a more focused update — picking off some of the highest-voted requests and continuing to polish areas that users are spending most of their time in.

As always, thank you for supporting The Working Tools. The system continues to grow because of your feedback and real-world use. If you know a Secretary in any Order who might benefit from what we're building, please do point them our way for a free trial.

More soon.

S&F,
Karl
